Using an iPad as a musician in 2024
Переглядів 878Місяць тому
These days I've stopped using paper music entirely and have gone completely digital. In this video I talk of upgrading to the larger 12.9 iPad four years ago and offer some thoughts on whether using a tablet for sheet music is something you want to do. Definitely check out my other videos talking about iPads (and about forScore, which to me is the best app for reading sheet music and the reason...
How to play "The Jolly Peasant" from the First Harp Book - Harp Tuesday ep. 279
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
In this episode I take a look at the Jolly Peasant from Betty Paret's First Harp Book and talk about why the rhythm of the piece and coordinating both hands is so tricky! EDIT: A patron mentioned that in fact this dance is probably a "Furiant" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furiant ) and that the first 2 bars should likely be 3 bars of 2/4, in which case the LH rhythm for those two bars is the odd one...
The new 13 inch iPad Air! What it means for musicians.
Переглядів 2,9 тис.Місяць тому
Since getting a larger size iPad pro 4 years ago I've gone completely digital with sheet music. As I talked about in a video looking at what iPad to buy ( www.harptuesday.com/ep198/ ) as far as using it to read sheet music goes, we don't need the power of the "Pro" (and this is even more true now with the M series chips). So I think it's fantastic that finally the large 13 inch size is availabl...

So neat to see you analyze your own technique, Josh!
Thanks! I enjoyed it, haha :)
Thanks so much Josh!
You're welcome!
Great video, Josh. So gorgeous to be able to see the different angles, trill fan here. My right thumb tends to be more straight as well. I always thought it is about my tiny hands. And: Envy you about the wrist movement! Nearly a 90 degree angle. 😮So useful for some movements. Well. We have to work with what we have, right?
Hah, indeed! Thanks Kristine :)
Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks Josh.
This is too Good but not strong as violin
The 4th Gen iPad Pro model I was using had terrible battery life, Face ID worked poorly if at all in anything but bright white light, but the real deal breaker was its weight. You didn't dare put it on anything less than a heavy Manhasset stand and the mounts I tried couldn't handle the weight either. Lightweight busking stands from OnStage or K&M could barely support the weight and were prone to toppling. As for pencils, just get a Logitech Crayon.
I booked all the workshops in Lohmar with Josh 🎶🎵😀. My German is not good enough for the other ones.
Haha, nice, see you soon!
I already booked the workshop in the end of October and am very happy about it :)
Awesome, see you in Hamburg!
See you there 😊
Very helpful for me as i learn this. Thank you!
Thank you for a classic song selection and great performance. I am starting to practice your arrangement of Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring. 🙏
These episodes are extremely helpful to learn how to take a piece apart..gold!
This beautiful piece fits on my 26-string Harpsicle :) But my fingernails buzz the hell out of the strings, I still have a long way to go with my finger habits.
Yeah, it's a great piece for small harp! :)
Cut those nails! The only time my tutor lost her tag with me🥰
@@libbymartin5686 I play recorder, the nails are always short. It's just sloppy finger placement and the BACK of the nails hit the strings!

Hey, huge thanks for the heads up about my webstore, Cheryl! Updated and should be fine now. I don't sell the sheet music - the version I played is from Henriette Renie's "Method for Harp" (Volume one). Renie herself slightly adapted Louise Charpentier's original arrangement which can be found in Charpentier's book "10 Pieces variees". Both the Renie Method and Charpentier's "10 Pieces variees" are available at many/most harp stores.
Beautiful, a bit mysterious almost haunting. Happy Harp Tuesday
Thanks Connie!
Josh! It's beautiful! And I brought it down to a very slow speed because I love to play meditation music in the evening and this works perfectly.😊 I love to listen to Robert Frost narrate his own poetry while I played my beautiful Ravenna 34 it's really sweet And heart nourishing. Thanks I will admit I never heard of this piece it's beautiful on the harp and fun to play.
Yeah, I think it sounds great at a slow tempo, and playing while you listen to Robert Frost sounds amazing, haha!
Beautiful melodies!
omg, french childhood memories alert haha❤ really beautiful.
Thanks!
I have been using an Ipad pro 3. generation for music. I broke it the other day and finding the right solution is giving me headaches! I would only use it for forscore Pro so most of the features I wont be using… anyway good review!
Oh my Josh. You are amazing. Just listened to it six times. Lizzie in UK
It's so beautiul music i think. I wanna listen this music's cover everyday!!
I’ve been trying to learn this on pedal harp it’s pretty adaptable but I don’t have my pedal harp right now because my piano teacher is using it for wedding gigs because hers is in the shop😔
Thanks so much for this wonderful peace!
I never get tired of hearing this.
My teacher gave me this piece for my new homework this week. Thank you for your video, this is very helpful ❤
Brilliant information thank you
😊thank you ! Awesome
Thank you for this video! Is your harp tuned in F? All the levers are down yet the B is flat. I'm new to the harp and this piece would be too difficult for me right now, at least at speed. So I'll focus on details like the levers :)
I don't suppose adding the pedal to your already full feet with the harp pedals, isn't a problem after a bit of practice?
Your thought processes remind me so much of my own when I finger organ or piano music!
I did not know that thank you I love your Harp videos
Hey, thanks Mia!
Thank you for this video. I was going to skip over this one but now I won’t be :)
This video and the previous one concerning the use of the IPad in music are unavoidable on the technical and practical level but also in view of the various worries to use this tool. Very helpful.
Thank you very much, clear and helpful!
Thank you Josh! Very timely for me.
Fantastic ❤❤❤
Oh MY GOODNESS JOsh! Watching your hand position - you don't have your "tumbs up" the way my Irish Harp teacher insists I do with both hands - yet your different left/right hand positions look more like mine and alot more comfortable for you obviously. Thank you so much for sharing this video, you have helped me relax alot more with getting my position comfortable for ME. This issue of hand/wrist position almost had me give up trying to learn after my first 6 months......I have watched another great tutorial today on Alexander technique and wrist angle - so that coupled with this video of yours has changed my frustration with hand position into HAPPY HARPING 🙂(Rae - Australia)
Ty 🙏💜
this is so helpful!! i'm currently trying to figure out how to record harp at home and it's so overwhelming!
Grazie, bellissimo bravo❤🙏✨✨✨
I currently use 2 music stands so I don't have to turn pages. After this episode, I purchased a foot pedal and am beginning to get set up on my iPad. My practice area has binders and sheet music lying around which need to be dealt with and organized. I hope this will work for me. I'm working on it! Thanks for your input, Josh!
In 2022 I bought a Lenovo Tab P11 (11 inch) for about 250 €. But I still prefer to play music from Paper.
I have been using the big ipad since about 2016 but have not been able to use it for a whole church service as the battery goes down so quickly. Was tempted to buy a newer one but not if the battery life is just as bad.
This new one battery is better( 13 inch )I play in church too
Buy an external battery pack and plug it in.
@@pattscrivenerartist yup did that but the ipad drained faster than it charged
@@torithemusician Maybe a new battery would solve your problem then.
A new iPad will definitely have a longer battery life to start with! All batteries degrade over time - my 4th gen 2020 iPad can still easily last for a number of hours but certainly doesn't have the battery life it did when it was new.
😊I just got my 13 inch iPad few hours ago ,can’t wait to use it for music sheet.
Nice, have fun!
I love the way you teach, very comprehensive. I am filipino and want to play harp. I have a locally made harp here in our place and i am starting to learn playing it and i want to know the basic. Thank you because i knew it from you. By the way, i hope it's not too late learning harp at my age 56? I'm interested to learn and plan to get a legitimate harp when i already can play harp.
This was excellent! I love Betty's book, as a student and a teacher. Thanks for the insights.
A patron mentioned that in fact this dance is probably a "Furiant" ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furiant ) and that the first 2 bars should likely be 3 bars of 2/4, in which case the LH rhythm for those two bars is the odd one out. Still hard to play it (as written), regardless of emphasis, since either the right or left hand will feel a bit weird! Folk dances can often have some great shifting meters, lots of fun!
Josh, how wonderful to hear about this tour! They were very fortunate to have you in Australia and you played beautifully!
